Phase-coherence time saturation in mesoscopic systems: wave function collapse
نویسنده
چکیده
A finite phase-coherence time τ meas φ emerges from iterative measurement onto a quantum system. For a rapid sequence, the phase-coherence time is found explicitly. For the stationary charge conduction problem, it is bounded. At all order, in the time-interval of measurements, we propose a general expression for τ meas φ. Intrinsic Decoherence in Mesoscopic Systems
We present measurements of the phase coherence time tf in six quasi-1D Au wires and clearly show that tf is temperature independent at low temperatures. We suggest that zero-point fluctuations of the phase coherent electrons are responsible for the observed saturation of tf. We introduce a new functional form for the temperature dependence and present the results of a calculation for the satura...
متن کاملPhase and temporal measurements in semiconductor quantum structures
A short overview is presented on measurements of phase evolution and temporal behavior of electrons in mesoscopic systems. Since ubiquitous conductance measurements provide only limited information about a system (its transmission coefficient), the complex values of all elements of the scattering matrix (transmission and reflection amplitudes), measured via interference experiments, might shed ...
متن کاملElectron Dephasing in Mesoscopic Metal Wires
The low-temperature behavior of the electron phase coherence time, τφ, in mesoscopic metal wires has been a subject of controversy recently. Whereas theory predicts that τφ(T ) in narrow wires should increase as T as the temperature T is lowered, many samples exhibit a saturation of τφ below about 1 K. We review here the experiments we have performed recently to address this issue. In particula...
متن کاملLong-Range Saturation of Spatial Decoherence in Wave-Field Transport in Random Multiple-Scattering Media
The transverse spatial coherence of an optical beam alters as the light traverses a dense, multiplescattering, random dielectric medium. Results of measurements show the predicted initial increase of the decoherence (or decorrelation) rate with spatial separation, followed by saturation at large separation. This behavior can be modeled by using a Boltzmann-like transport equation for the Wigner...
متن کاملDecoherence and quantum fluctuations
The importance of decoherence in the quantum to classical transition is well known. There are many examples where a quantum system undergoes environmentally induced decoherence, such as the electron wave function in a lowdimensional solid, an atom trapped in a quantum optical system, and an isolated quantum system coupled to a measuring apparatus. It has also been suggested that the decoherence...
